Laura has been working at The Blue Badge Company for three months now. Here she shares her story about what it was like being on Project Search, working with a Job Coach at Sixteen Co-operative and her experience of finding employment:

“I did Project Search in January 2020 and as part of that, I completed work experience at: 
  • A post room - I sorted the post, logged parcels, coded the boxes and talked to students to give them their post.  
  • A local school – I went into the classrooms with the children and did break-time duties and went out with the children for lunchtime.
  • A charity shop - I sorted out the books in alphabetical order and cleaned the furniture.
It gave me an understanding of the world of work. After I finished Project Search, I knew that I wanted to find a paid job.”

Laura then worked with a Community Job Coach at Sixteen Co-operative Ltd through the We Work for Everyone Programme. They worked together on her job search and what was important to her. 

“The things that were important to me for my job search were: 
  • Something creative 
  • A small team
  • A job that had the same routine

We found the job at Blue Badge. They are a creative company and make and package different kinds of products like wallets for blue badges, doorstops, lap trays, iPad stands, all kinds of things.  

Instead of an interview, I did a work trial to get an understanding of the job. They asked me questions at the end. They were really impressed with me and they offered me the job while I was on holiday!

I felt happy and excited! 

I did some travel training with my job coach to get off at the right bus stop for work and then I would do the walk to Blue Badge. Now I get the bus independently every shift. 

I had a job coach support me when I started, they helped me learn the role, and talk to my manager if need any help. Now I am doing my job independently.

What difference has it made having a job? It has made a lot of difference. I am now out of the house and I am earning my own money, it has really helped me with my confidence. 

To anyone thinking about finding a job and working with a job coach, I would say: “Just go for it!””

Throughout the Pandemic, Sixteen had been supporting Ashley to look for a role which suited his talents and abilities. Despite a number of setbacks, Ashley persisted and with our help in July he was thrilled to get an opportunity to join Kwik Fit. After Sixteen helped him to settle in, he has undertaken a number of different branch placements and worked hard on his in-house qualifications, and we're very pleased to say that having passed his probation he is now a valued, full-time, permanent member of staff. Well done, Ashley!

This is an innovative and exciting position, building on work carried out over the past few years. 

On a day-to-day basis, the Senior job coach will have responsibility for working and liaising with the schools, developing programmes and delivering employment-based sessions to classes and individuals, on-line and face to face.

You will also organise, plan and support work placements for the students. These placements will be bespoke and will be developed by the postholder, whilst liaising with schools, employers and families/carers.

You will be at a distinct advantage if you have experience of providing workshops, webinars or tutorials on-line. You should also have job coaching experience and be able to deliver a programme to a small class of students face to face.

]]><![CDATA[Lockdown reflections - community job coach]]>Fri, 17 Jul 2020 12:26:27 GMThttps://www.sixteencoop.co.uk/news/lockdown-reflections-community-job-coachIn the community programme, we usually spend the majority of our time on site, working directly with people in the workplace, helping them to learn the different aspects of their role, supporting them to settle into a new environment, and then coaching them with their tasks until they feel confident and able enough for us to drop back.

As all of this relies on us being in close contact and being able to see and hear what they are doing, the Corona virus lockdown has proved quite an obstacle! Most of the people we work with are now doing so from home as much as their job will allow, as are we the job coaches.

In a way it has been a blessing in disguise, as we have been very lucky to have the opportunity to try new techniques and different ways to coach our clients, most of all using Zoom and Teams. While there will always be roles where a Job Coach has to be physically present, the use of communication tech allows us to see what the person we are supporting can see and to be able to speak to them in real time, to share our own screens and documents, and to join in with their team briefings and meetings with their in-house mentors or supervisors, all of which is very close to what we would do if we were physically present.

We have learnt to overcome a great number of potential hazards, and it has given us new options and additional tools that we can use beyond the current pandemic, which makes scheduling training and meetings very much easier, and very importantly also allows us to save time and fuel moving physically between sites, so it’s good for efficient working and the planet!

However, we do miss the opportunity to meet and speak to our job seekers, colleagues and partners in person so are working hard to rethink what we do as restriction are lifted.  We look forward to supporting more people in and through work and to working together to reduce the impact of the pandemic.
